It should come to no surprise to any one that we all have stress in our lives from time to time. This stress can cause uncomfortable physical effects. While some stress is perfectly fine, high levels of stress can have a much more serious impact on our bodies which can cause hair loss.
What can cause stress?
We should discuss the difference between different types of stress. Short-term stress might include things like taking an exam, going to a job interview or maybe just driving on an unfamiliar road. More serious levels of stress can come from an illness, financial worries, if you’re going through a divorce or having other relationship issues, even traumatic events like the loss of a loved one can lead to high stress levels that can be a trigger to cause male and female hair loss.
Stress and Hair
The Mayo Clinic has reported that high stress levels can be associated with three types of hair loss.
- Alopecia Areata: severe stress levels can cause your immune system to attack your hair follicles, which can cause hair loss.
- Trichotillomania: for many it might seem perfectly normal to twirl your hair while watching tv or reading, but stress can actually cause a person to have an urge to pull out their hair.
- Telogen effluvium: This happens when stress causes the hair follicles to become inactive. This results in the hair thinning until it falls out which can happen months after the event(s) that triggered the high stress level.
Nobody wants this amount of stress and certainly they don’t want to lose the hair which can cause them more stress. The good news is that the hair loss associated with stress is not always permanent. Once the stress levels are back to normal the hair growth cycle should begin again.
Emotional effects of hair loss
It doesn’t matter if you’re male or female, hair loss regardless of type can be upsetting. Stress and anxiety is enough to deal with but when you notice your friends and colleagues glancing up at your thinning hair, your self esteem, which can already be a little shaky at this point, can drop even lower.
